The Legendary EMT 140 Plate Reverb
The EMT 140 was the world’s first plate reverb — a true landmark in recording history. It was built by the German company Elektromesstechnik (EMT) and introduced in 1957 as a mono unit. A few years later, in 1961, a stereo version followed. As a result, the EMT 140 quickly became a studio essential for engineers searching for a controllable, natural reverb long before the digital era.
A Classic Sound That Shaped Generations
Unlike room or chamber reverbs, the EMT 140 uses a suspended steel plate driven by a transducer. This design creates a dense and harmonically rich decay with a smooth, musical ambience. Because of this, its tone feels warm, open, and immersive. It adds natural space without overly coloring the source.
Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, the EMT 140 defined the sound of countless classic recordings. For example, it became the go-to choice for vocals, strings, drums, and orchestral mixes. Even today, its silky diffusion and natural sustain make it one of the most beloved reverbs in both analog and digital form.
Captured as Impulse Responses by Nevo Studios
At Nevo Studios, we have carefully captured this iconic reverb as high-resolution Impulse Responses (IRs) from our original EMT 140 plate. Therefore, the result preserves its authentic tone — with the same rich decay, smooth diffusion, and warm spatial depth that made it legendary. In addition, these IRs allow you to bring the unmistakable sound of a true EMT 140 into your own productions.
